The town of Nova Gradiska was founded in 1748 as a part of the Croatian Military Border (Vojna krajina). The foundations of one of its oldest buildings - the Curch of St. Theresa - where laid in 1754. The church is one of the most significant monuments of late - baroque Slavonian church - architekture. The town's large central square and the nearby park from a harmonious unit with the old urban core - the Church of St. Theresa, the old 19th century court and jail house the parish curch of Immaculate Conception from the beginning of the 19th century, painted by a famous Croatian painter Celestin Medovic. At the beginning of the 20th century Nova Gradiska was one of the first Croatian towns to hawe asphalted pavements and electrity.
Nova Gradiska is situated in the south - western area of easten Croatia and it lies on the intersection of important international travel routes: motorway Zagreb - Lipovac, railway Zagreb - Vinkovci, the ancient military road (Krajiska cesta) and state road towards the towns of Pozega and Nasice. The town is an important industrial centre with timber and wood, textile, food processing and metal manufacturing industries as well as with a well - developed private sector. Health care facilites and the town's schools, together with the town library, museum, art gallery and many cultural and sports clubs give the town a special importance within the Brodsko - posavska County.
During the war Serbian aggressors committed appalling atrocities and caused both the town and its people great sufferings. Many people were killed, injured or expelled from their homes. One third of the town was destroyed in heavy shellfire but the people found strength to keep their hope and rebuilt - glowing with new colours.
Tourism in Nova Gradiska has early routs - back in 1892 a ''Club for the Embellishment of the Town'' was formed and in 1930 it took the name ''Tourist society''. The tradition of this body in today carried on by the Tourist Board of Nova Gradiska. The board organizes different cultural and artistic events some of which are: the Carnival parade, flower exhibition , national folklore festival, mushroom exhibition, festival of traditional wind instruments and '' Nova Gradiska Music Summer''. The town has a wide range of sports facilities to offer to its guests. Bikers from all over Croatia and lately even from other European countries come to Nova Gradiska to yearly ''Strmac Biker Meetings''.
Easy to reach by car, bus or train, the town has a gerat tourist potential - natural beauties of wooded slopes of Psunj and the calm and peaceful Sava valley are just a small part of what this little town and its kind and friendly people have to offer to their guests and friends. Welcome!
